The best in the business doesn't compromise

Rangiora is home to one of New Zealand’s oldest and most highly regarded bakeries. Rangiora Bakery employs over 180 local staff to produce some of the country’s best custard squares, Christmas fruit cakes and sweet and savoury pies. So good in fact, they’re baked locally and exported around the world.

“We’re proud of what we have here. We have a rule: we don’t compromise,” says managing director Ron van Til. “From the ingredients we use, to the processes we have in place, to the fixtures and fittings we have in our café. We always insist on the best.”

Ron says a well-run business is about continuous improvement and doing things once – and doing them well. That’s why making the switch to fibre broadband when it became available was a no-brainer.

“Everything is instant now – we used to have to wait for EFTPOS transactions to go through, now it happens straight away – that’s better for the customer, and better for us. We’re able to offer free Wi-Fi to our customers without it clogging up our own system. That makes their experience of visiting our café more enjoyable – and it doesn’t cost our own productivity.”

But just like every other business, it comes down to the bottom line.

“I don’t need to travel overseas as much as I used to – most of it is done over our seamless broadband connection. It’s not scratchy like the old days, it’s just like having someone in front of you. That saves time spent travelling, money on airfares and gives me more time to be with family and live life – doing what I want.”

“The efficiencies we’ve achieved – including cost savings – has meant we are now a slicker operation. We can focus on what we do well, which is baking, rather than be slowed down by buffering or an unreliable connection.”

“My advice to any business who has not made the switch is: Do it. It’s at your door and you’re doing yourself a disservice by not having it."
